Anna Madgigine Jai Kingsley

Senegambian Anna Madgigine Jai Kingsley was initially the property of British plantation owner Zephaniah Kingsley and later became one of his four African-born wives. She raised their four children and became a landowner and slaveholder.

They lived on the Kingsley Plantation from 1814 to 1837 in then Spanish-controlled Florida. After the United States took control of Florida and American discriminatory laws threatened the multi-racial Kingsley family, most of them moved to Haiti. Kings ley died soon after and his family attempted to exclude Anna and their children from their inheritance.

She returned to Florida and was successful in the court case. She settled in the Arlington neighborhood of Jacksonville, Florida where she died in 1870 at 77 years old.
